What I care about is that if you pick wild mushrooms and eat them, trying to get high, you could easily kill yourself by misidentifying your quarry. And even if you identify Amanita muscaria correctly, you may not only get high but also put yourself in the hospital, since it contains dangerous as well as psychoactive toxins.
BronIbotenic Acid
Found in Amanita gemmata, Amanita muscaria, Amanita pantherina, and other species, ibotenic acid can produce vivid dreams, hallucinations, and delusions--but also terrible nausea and vomiting and/or, in some cases, deep sleep. Hospitalization is sometimes required.
Muscarine
Muscarine is the primary toxin found in some species of Clitocybe, Inocybe, and red-pored species of Boletus. The effects are awful, and too numerous to list comprehensively here (one mnemonic used by doctors and medical students to memorize a just few of the symptoms is SLUDGE: Salivation, Urination, Gastric Upset, and Emesis)--but profuse sweating, irregular heart rate, breathing difficulty, and bad vision deserve special mention. In severe cases hospitalization is necessary, and doctors sometimes use atropine as a treatment. Fatalities are rare, and are generally limited to victims with preexisting health problems.
BronMuscimol is produced naturally in the mushrooms Amanita muscaria, Amanita pantherina, and Amanita gemmata, along with muscarine, muscazone, and ibotenic acid. Of these, only A. muscaria and A. pantherina are considered somewhat safe for human consumption, with the other being far more dangerous; however lethal poisonings have occurred from A. muscaria and A. pantherina as well.[1],[2] It is thought that[who?], in A. muscaria, the layer just below the skin of the cap contains the highest amount of muscimol, and is therefore the most psychoactive portion.
BronThe Experience
The potency and effects of amanitas vary widely among individuals and among mushroom specimens. Strong nausea and/or vomiting are common, particularly in the first few hours. Some users report euphoria and a sociable feeling of inebriation with some similarities to alocohol intoxication. Users may experience mild visual distortions, loss of balance, and sedation. Some report feeling a sense of internal clarity, while others feel disoriented or confused.

Many people experience nausea and/or vomiting during amanitas experiences, especially during the first few hours. Drying or cooking amanitas prior to consumption appears to reduce nausea. Other common negative effects include muscle twitching and increased salivation or sweating.
