Die visions ja.Eccentric singer NICK CAVE credits his drug abuse with the success of his debut novel AND THE ASS SAW THE ANGEL.
The RED RIGHT HAND star admits his addiction to heroin and speed forced him to stay awake for staggering lengths of time, enabling him to focus on the book and inspired the surreal baroque tale, about a deranged man whose obsession with a young prostitute leads to a horrific clash with the religious sect that controls his town.
He explains, "I was always taking heroin. But that Berlin amphetamine. It's the most extraordinary stuff. If you kept taking more, you never slept. If it wasn't that your body finally gave in, you just never did.
"So that created some extraordinarily lenghty days and nights at the typewriter. The original manuscript was twice as long as the published version. And the visions. The speed had something to do with that."
