nervous system, and gastrointestinal system.
Mercury poisoning induces cognitive and social deficits, including loss of speech or failure to
develop it, memory impairment, poor concentration, word comprehension difficulties,
and an assortment of autism-like behaviors including sleep difficulties,
self injurious behavior (e.g. head banging and self-biting) agitation,
unprovoked crying, and staring spells.
Sources of mercury exposure include air and water polution,
amalgam dental fillings batteries, cosmetics, shampoos , mouthwashes, toothpaste, soaps,
mercurial diuretics, electrical devices and relays, explosives, residues in foods (especially grains),
fungicides, fluorescent lights freshwater fish such as bass, pike and trout,
insecticides pesticides, paints, petroleum products,
saltwater fish such as halibut,shrimp, snapper, swordfish, shark, tuna and shellfish.

Dental fillings are an important source of mercury-contamination.
Amalgam fillings release microscopic particles and vapors of mercury. This shedding of mercury is increased by chewing and by drinking hot liquids. Those vapors are absorbed by tooth roots, mucous membranes of the mouth and gums, and are inhaled and swallowed,
, thereby reaching the esophagus, stomach, and intestines.
University of Calgary researchers report 10% of amalgam mercury eventually accumulates in body organs.
Years after amalgam removal, some patients have shown high high mercury urine output with a chelation challenge, with subsequent improvement in health after chelation.
Ingested mercury can be passed to the fetus in wombs of pregnant mothers
from the mother’s amalgams when she chews and particularly when she has either placement or removal dental work involving amalgams. In march 2002 the parents of a five-year-old child brought suit against the American Dental Association, alleging mercury in the mother’s nine dental fillings caused her son’s autism. Also named as defendants were the California Dental Association and more than 20 corporations that deal in materials used to produce amalgam fillings, which are about 50% mercury by weight.
The lawsuit accused them of fraud, negligence and illegal and deceptive business practices.
Many lawsuits have been filed against drug companies alleging links between autism and vaccines containing mercury (thimoresal), attorneys and scientists familiar with such litigation say this is believed to be the first to allage a connection between autism and amalgam fillings.
‘’I don’t know that it’s proven but it’s credible, very credible,’’
Said Dr. Boyd haley, former chairman of the chemistry department at the University of Kentucky and an expert on mercury toxicity.’’Mercury is one of the most neurotoxic compounds known to man.’’ Dr Haley said some studies show people with amalgam fillings have four to five times as much mercury in their blood as people without such fillings,
