Lidocaine is, hoewel het een minder goed plaatselijk verdovingsmiddel is dan cocaïne, net zo populair omdat het geen centraal effect heeft (geen effect in de hersenen). Maar dat is natuurlijk buiten het placebo effect gerekend. Ooit zijn er experimenten gedaan met ervaren cokegebruikers en die bleken een lijn lidocaine vaak niet te kunne onderscheiden van cocaïne.
