U.S. drug officers and Los Angeles police seized more than 1,200 pounds of marijuana and arrested eight Jamaicans in a drug-trafficking investigation.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency said the arrests were made Thursday at an apartment in Los Angeles, where officers confiscated cash and weapons in addition to the large amount of marijuana.
Authorities said the marijuana was packed in 25 large bales and had a street value of about $1 million. They said they found a 9mm assault rifle fitted with a silencer. A DEA release said the weapon is used by Navy SEALs in military operations.
Detectives said the confiscated cash -- an estimated $100,000 -- was heat-sealed in plastic.
All eight men arrested were Jamaicans, and seven of them had prior felony convictions, had been deported, and have since illegally re-entered the United States, the DEA said. All were being held in lieu of $100,000 bond.
